Video of the Week - Week 72

A recent theme of VOTW has been to show you videos of some of the summer's hottest upcoming albums. But this week I've decided to take us back to the cold, desolate days of 2007, when an album by the name of Places Like This made it into Audio Overflow's top albums of the year. This song is one of the best on that album, and the video itself is just as quirky as the music. So, you know...here you go.

Moods - Goofy

Have you ever been in one of those goofy moods where seemingly everything is funny? Where you feel more hyperactive than normal, and all you want to do is have a good time? Yeah, I get those sometimes. When such a thing happens, I usually try to encourage that mood with an equally goofy soundtrack. More often than not, that means I'm going to pop in The Sunlandic Twins by Of Montreal. But in the interest of variety, I've assembled what I feel is playlist that is goofy enough to stand on its own. Hopefully it will keep you in that goofy mood of yours.

The Top 31 of 2007 - #10

Cale's Pick
Architecture in Helsinki: Places Like This
Released: August 21, 2007

It can be argued that Places Like This, the latest album from Australia's Architecture in Helsinki is a musically less-impressive album than their previous. I probably wouldn't argue with you too much on that one. One could also say it's less inventive. Maybe. But to say that it's worse...well that's just asking for a beat down. Because as I much as I love some twee here and there, AiH's first two albums were tedious to listen to. The rarely ever conveyed the fun that should come along with the twee genre. On Places Like This, the band evolves their sound entirely. It sounds more like a B-52s revival than anything else. Missed notes are par for the coarse. An upbeat, never ending assault on your smiling muscles, the album is an absolute blast to listen to! It is the most fun album of 2007. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't heard it or prefers to spend quality one on one time with razor blades and hair dye. That's just science...

For reminding me that music can be fun and entertaining, AiH dances their way into the top ten!

The Top 31 Songs of 2007 - #10
"Lake Michigan" by Rogue Wave, from the album, Asleep at Heaven's Gate.

Jill's Pick
Prince: Planet Earth
Released: July 24, 2007

I kind of never know what to expect from a Prince album. Nothing in his catalog is as good as "Sign O' the Times" was and sometimes everything else sounds exactly the same, but I do have a long standing appreciation for his musical genius. He's a master at Funk and Soul, he appreciates Jazz and Classical, and he knows how to blend them all together in the perfect way.

There's that awful song "Guitar" that was in one commercial or another. It's a cross between the 70's and 80's style Prince, which makes it like a variety show: there's slow jams, love songs, vintage Prince Funk/Soul jams, Piano ballads.

What I learned listening to this album, which I listen to when I'm cleaning (yes, I assign albums to different tasks and reserve them solely for those.) is that Prince doesn't belong anywhere categorically in music: he's just a genius with diverse talent.

In retrospect, this probably should have been more in the 20's of my list. (Oh well.)

My favorite track: "Chelsea Rodgers" (which is so fantastically Prince)

Songs you should give a listen to:
--"Somewhere Here On Earth"
--"The One U Wanna C"
--"Future Baby Mama"
--"All the Midnights in the World"
--"Mr. Goodnight" ("People call me Prince but you can call me Mr. Goodnight..." so cheesy but so good.)
--"Chelsea Rodgers"

The Top 31 of 2007 - #18

Cale's Pick
Metric: Grow Up and Blow Away
Released: June 26, 2007

One could make the argument that Grow Up and Blow Away does not belong on a Best of 2007 list for the simple fact that it was made the better part of a decade ago. Of course, I could make the argument that that person is an idiot for thinking that (and I'd be right). The fact is that even though Grow Up and Blow Away was meant to be released when I was still in high school, it didn't ever get a formal release until 2007. It's a shame too, because this is a fantastic album. Emily Haines doesn't portray herself as a rough, opinionated figure of femininity as she does nowadays. She sounds girlish and innocent, and you can tell that she has yet to mature into the strong female that she would later become. Grow Up and Blow Away features Metric as a two-piece too, so there's no resemblance to the four-piece new wave rock band they've grown into; sounding more like a pop act than anything else. In the end, it's just a fun, satisfying album that doesn't try to make a statement or be overly complex. It's a couple of kids playing around with synths and drum machines, stumbling upon greatness in the process. And it's all the more magical because of it.

It may be old, but it's still deserving of the #18 spot on my list.

"Hold Music" by Architecture in Helsinki, from the album, Places Like This.

Jill's Pick
Jill Scott: The Real Thing - Words and Sounds Vol. 3
Released: September 25, 2007

I am a HUGE Jill Scott fan. HUGE. She has this philosophy about music that I apply to pretty much everything (try to at least): Who cares what kind of music you make as long as you make it and it's around to be heard?

(HUGE Jill Scott fan) (So much so she's on my list twice)

I think the word ironic works for this album: it's a reflection of a breaking up relationship and watching someone you love move on to someone else but at the same time, it's a like a D'Angelo hook up album. It's sexy, it's soulful, it's...dirty. Well, except for that one song "Hate On Me", which is dedicated to an online forum she found of people who dislike her.

It's a short (weak, maybe) review, but that isn't because I don't like the album. I just don't have the right words for how this album works for me: Jill Scott's powerful sense of self just rubs off on me.

My favorite track: "Whenever You're Around"

Songs you should give a listen to:
--"Hate On Me"
--"Epiphany"
--"Whenever You're Around"
--"Breathe"

4th Annual Cale Awards Update!

Can I share a secret with you? I hate doing myspace music monday. It's such a chore to weed out all the crappy bands on myspace to find the one or two decent ones. As a result of my hate towards the feature and a really hectic schedule for the rest of 2007, myspace music monday is gone until 2008! We had a good run, babe.

But hey, that's not what this post is about! It's to update you on the happenings of the 4th Annual Cale Awards (going on RIGHT NOW!). So far things are going kind of slow. None of my regular readers from the U.K. and only one Californian (my second-largest audience) have voted thus far. That's quite alright though, because there are some heated battles going on!

Take the Album of the Year category, in which Of Montreal and Radiohead are tied in the polls at the moment of this writing. Even more heated is the epic battle for Best Male Solo Artist in which Jens Lekman, Patrick Wolf, and Loney, Dear are in a three-way tug of war for superiority! Sure, it may sound like I'm being overdramatic for the sole purpose of luring you readers over to the polls, but I assure you this is not my intention.

There are also some upsets brewing. St. Vincent is running away with both the Best Female Solo Artist award and the award for Best New Artist. I think she deserves both, personally. A huge surprise to me was The Besnard Lakes pulling ahead in the Band of the Year category. I've also discovered that I'm alone in my admiration for Architecture in Helsinki's new material, at least so far.
It's all pretty enlightening to me, and if you have 2 or 3 minutes to spare (it may even take less than that), please head over to the polls and cast your votes for the best and worst of 2007! As always, you can write in your own nominations for each category. This is not only a fun way to appreciate our favorite artists, but it helps me to know what kind of music you listen to and what type of music I should cover more of to cater to you. It's kinda the most important thing ever, folks.

I don't know what else to say....
